This town possesses streets covered with logs and the main characteristic is the position of the terraces. They say that the first floor belonged to the Chancas who came from the south, the second story to the mestizos, and the third level was used as a lookout. Today, they maintain this division between the Indians, the Lamistas, and population of mixed races, who celebrate their patron saints separately. • This was the bastion of the Chachapoya tribe, a citadel whose access is through narrow walled passages like sloping funnels which helped to keep out invaders. This impressive stone fortress was built by the Chachapoya people, a fierce people that for years resisted the expansion of the Incas, around 800 A.D. It is located 3000 masl / 9843 fasl and is 6 hectares in surface. There are three defensive platforms; the first is 20 meters / 66 feet high and 680 meters / 2231 feet long. Its three entrances are walled alley-ways that narrow as they climb up to the following two platforms. Inside, there are 420 circular buildings decorated with rhomboidal and zigzag friezes. Kuelap is proof of the engineering skills of the Chachapoya tribe. The complex must have been impregnable to invading warriors from neighboring kingdoms, although finally the Inca soldiers managed to conquer them.
  • Ancient Peruvians were highly successful in integrating with nature. The Chachapoya, whose secrets still lie, buried in the dense jungle, created harmonic structures in a privileged site, a timeless land where the jungle-clad hills are wreathed by mist.

The mummy was accompanied by ceremonial items including jewelry and weapons, and the remains of a teenage girl who had been sacrificed. Peruvian archaeologists, under the direction of lead scientist Regulo Franco, made the discovery in 2005 at this ancient ceremonial site known as El Brujo (The Wizard).
