Arequipa to celebrate its anniversary with 4 km parade

On August 15, Arequipa will celebrate 473 years since its founding with a big celebration.

Every year Arequipa, the White City, celebrates its anniversary with the corso de amistad, friendship parade. This year, the organizers have announced the parade will tour over 4 kilometers of the city.

Thousands of Arequipeños and visitors congregate to enjoy the festive music, the colorful and joyous dances, and undoubtedly the fine food Arequipa is known for. The parade will commence at 10 am, and will start at Ave. Lima in the district of Mariano Melgar. It will continue through Ave Mariscal Castilla and Independencia, will go through calle Victor Lira and Ave. Dolores and end up on Ave. Andres Avelino Caceres.

It’s estimated that it will run for 8 hrs due to the large amount of dances, musical performances and floats that will participate. The commission in charge of the festivities gathers the theme will be “Arequipa: Cultural Patrimony for Humanity.” Furthermore, they announced 80% of the dances will be from the region, restricting the number of dances from the altiplano Puno region.
