Arequipa, Aug. 08 (ANDINA).
A parade of some 2,500 flamboyantly costumed dancers kicked off celebrations to mark the 471st founding anniversary of Peru's southern city of Arequipa on Sunday.
Hundreds of tourists and locals crowded into the España Square in downtown Arequipa to watch dancers coming from different provinces such as Condesuyos, Cayarani, La Unión and Caylloma.
The ceremony was organised by the regional government of Arequipa with the participation of the marching band of the Independencia Americana school.
Some of the dances performed on the Plaza España included Carnaval de Cayarani, Barbecho Yapuy, Wititi & Camile, Los Turcos, Carnaval Achomeño, La Lecherita, Carnaval de Caylloma among others.
The “official” anniversary of Arequipa holds court on August 15 with the traditional annual parade that snakes four kilometers through the city's central avenues.
