Lima, Jul. 13 (ANDINA). Peruís Export and Tourism Promotion Board (PromPeru) said that Peru aims to receive 2.8 million tourists this year and one of its main tasks will be to further promote the southern Puno region, which was affected recently by social unrest.
"We are expecting to receive 2.8 million tourists this year. Puno shouldnít change that figure because the southern circuit is sold as a whole, so if there are problems, tourists stay more days in Cusco or Arequipa to visit more places in those cities," Promperuís director Rocio Merino stated.
Merino noted that in the first quarter of 2011, incoming tourism grew by 15 percent, a figure high enough to show recovery from the same period last year, when it dropped due to the heavy rains in Cusco.
She went on to add that in the second quarter tourism in Puno fell about 30 percent due to the social unrest in the region. However, international tour operators continue selling packages to the said destination.
"We think we have time to recover tourism in Puno and so we have designed a strategy that was presented to Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Eduardo Ferreyros and to the Transfer Commission which include 19 activities to boost tourism in the region."
