Peru Travel News: Peru to promote alternative archaeological sites to Machu Picchu

Lima. Feb. 10 (ANDINA). Culture Minister Juan Ossio has stressed the need to increase public awareness and interest in Peru's archaeological heritage by promoting alternative sites to Machu Picchu. the country's top tourist attraction.

The minister cited the ancient citadels of Huanuco Pampa. Kuelap and Marcahuamachuco as alternative attractions for both domestic and foreign tourists.

"Everyone who comes to Peru thinks of Machu Picchu in Cusco. but we have to offer other choices like Huanuco Pampa. Kuelap and Marcahuamachuco." he said.

Ossio announced that his ministry and the regional government of Huanuco signed an inter-institutional cooperation agreement with the aim of promoting tourism at Huanuco Pampa. the ancient capital city of Chinchaysuyu. the Northern Inca territorial division of the Tawantinsuyo. a name by which the Incas referred to their whole territory or kingdom in their own language.

Huanuco Pampa. also known as Huanuco Pampa or Huanuco Marca Peru. is the best and largest example of Inca administrative centers.

The site covers an area of 2 square Km. it possesses between 3.500 and 4.000 visible structures and was built on virgin land during the first half of the fifteenth century.
