News: About 240.000 tourists visited Lambayeque in January-May

Chiclayo. Jul. 03 (ANDINA). Some 240.000 Peruvian and foreign tourists visited the northern Lambayeque region between January and May this year. 20.000 more than the same period in 2009.

Regional trade and tourism director Salvador Perez warned that although there was a slight increase from last year. crime-related issues could cause a drop in visitor arrivals.

A total of 450.000 tourists visited Lambayeque in 2008. while 480.000 visitors arrived in this northern region last year. Local tourism officials expect nearly 500.000 tourists to visit Lambayeque until the end of 2010.

To this end. the official stressed the need to establish a Regional Tourist Safety and Security Network with the participation of both public and private institutions.

In addition. he urged the Provincial Municipality of Chiclayo. capital of Lambayeque. to open a Public Safety Operations Center. 'Our duty is to protect tourists. but we cannot do it alone because our efforts would be futile.' said Perez.

Some of the most notable attractions in Lambayeque include the Pomac Forest Historical Sanctuary. the Royal Tombs of Sipan Museum. Tucume and the Valley of the Pyramids as well as Pimentel beach resort.
