Article: Colca Canyon Tours

The Colca Canyon is located in Arequipa and is one of the most toured destinations in Peru. Colca Canyon is a canyon of the Colca River in southern Peru. It is located about 100 miles (160 kilometers) northwest of Arequipa. It is more than twice as deep as the Grand Canyon in the United States at 4.160 m. However. the canyon's walls are not as vertical as those of the Grand Canyon. The Colca Valley is a colorful Andean valley with towns founded in Spanish Colonial times and formerly inhabited by the Collaguas and the Cabanas. The local people still maintain ancestral traditions and continue to cultivate the pre-Inca stepped terraces.

Travelers hoping to take a Colca Canyon Tour usually need to follow a certain path commencing in the “white city” of Arequipa.  The most common situation is that you will need to leave the city very early and start your journey towards the Colca Canyon.  It’s a long drive. however you will be well accompanied since other tourist from different parts of the world will probably be joining you in the van; this might be a good time to brush up of your foreign languages.  The drive goes through paved roads. dirt roads. sand. up and down hills and a variety of other terrains; all while ascending in altitude.  At the highest point you will be at over 4.600 meters above sea level (about 16.000 feet) on your way to a small town called Chivay; the halfway mark really.  Spending the night in this small Andean town is usually what you must do in order to try and arrive at the Cruz Del Condor in the Colca Canyon by midday the following and see the majestic Andean Condors.

Once you reach the The Colca Canyon the next day remember to have your camera ready. the giant Andean Condor can be surprisingly fast and you might not get a second chance for a great shot.  The Colca Canyon tour includes time up in the Cruz del Condor and if you want even a nature walk in the Canyon; giving you the opportunity to take some amazing photographs of the local flora and fauna which surround the region.
