Article: Arequipa

A definite “go to” destination when putting together your itinerary for your Peru travel packages would be the city of Arequipa.  It is located in the southern highland region of Peru and is considered one of Peru’s most beautiful cities.

Arequipa is also known as the “white city”. this is due to the fact that many of its buildings were constructed from white volcanic ash.  This white ash is common and comes mainly from a nearby volcano; “El Misti”.  The white churches and homes make Arequipa stand out from your typical city and that in itself is more than enough to make Arequipa a worthwhile destination.

Arequipa is also knows for its delicious cuisine. it is considered some of the best cooking in an already famous for its food country.  Typical dishes are “chupe de camarones” a type of river shrimp chowder and “rocoto relleno” a type of stuffed peppers among other dishes.  This region is also known for its ample use of hot peppers in the local cuisine so if you’re ready to sample good. spicy dishes Arequipa is definitely for you.

One of the main reasons why travelers go to Arequipa is to go to the Colca Canyon.  This Canyon is arguably the deepest one in the world. it is much deeper then the Grand Canyon in the US.  Tours to this place usually start early in the morning. and take about 6 hours to get to a small village called Chivay. It is common protocol to spend one night in town and then start bright and early the next day.  Your night in Chivay can be spent in a local restaurant watching a musical show with ethnic instruments. The very next morning you will leave very early. usually at 5:30 in the morning to begin your way to Colca Canyon.  This part of Arequipa has difficult terrain so good transportation is in order.  Before arriving to the canyon you are likely to visit small towns along the way where you will be able to by souvenirs. food etc.  Once at the canyon you will be amazed by the incredible size and depth. if you’re lucky you will be able to spot Andean condors roaming the skies.

Make sure to book Arequipa in your next Peru travel plans. always do it in advance and of course once there enjoy your trip.  Arequipa will surely be a great destination that won’t disappoint.
