The Mapi Pone campaign -to be soon launched- will enable to double the visits of Peruvian tourists to Machu Picchu, between 300 thousand and 320 thousand, on the year of the 100th anniversary of Hiram Bingham’s discovery of the Inca archeological treasure. The president of the National Chamber of Tourism (Canatur) Carlos Canales explained that for the launching of the campaign -which will be similar to Cusco Pone (Cusco Rocks) or Norte Pone (The North Rocks)- coordination meetings are being held with Peru’s Tourism and Export Promotion Board, and tourism entrepreneurs.

“We’ve asked train operators to think of an attractive price and prepare a schedule so that inbound tourism is not interfered,” said Canales.

He added that “the Mapi Pone campaign focuses on attracting national tourists. The objective is to double the number of Peruvians on the centennial year of the country’s main tourist attraction; that is, to reach between 300 thousand and 320 thousand visits.” (more…)

The Inca citadel of Machu Pichu, in Cusco, is one of the world’s top 16 tourist destinations for 2011, according to the Ocholeguas blog of the Spanish newspaper El Mundo, which notes that this year is the Centennial celebration of Hiram Bingham’s first trip to the Inca archeological treasure.

“2011 marks the centennial celebrations commemorating the discovery of one of the most fascinating archeological sites on earth: Machu Picchu. A hundred years ago, U.S. archeologist and explorer Hiram Bingham believed that he had found the lost city of the Incas, Vilcabamba.”

With the approach of its 100th anniversary in 2011, comes the good news that Yale university has agreed to return to Peru several thousand artifacts taken from the Inca citadel, a world heritage site in Peru.

The municipality of Machu Picchu, in Cusco, proposed the creation of an “imperial circuit” and the enhancement of urban areas in the occasion of the centennial celebrations commemorating the discovery of the inca citadel, Mayor Oscar Valencia said Thursday. The project, which consists of 12 points, has been delivered to the Ministries of Foreign Trade and Tourism, Culture, and Environment, as well as to private entities.

According to the mayor, this route would begin at Plaza Manco Capac and include a stroll along the margin of the Aguas Calientes river to the El Mirador park and back to Plaza Manco Capac through the center of the city. (more…)

Peruvian authorities in the southeastern Cusco region are preparing a varied calendar of activities to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the scientific discovery of Machu Picchu throughout the year.

Regional trade and tourism director Carlos Zuñiga said tourism-related organizations will soon meet to finalise and announce the schedule for the year-long celebrations.

The official told Andina that the Centennial events will include fairs, a film festival, conferences, the launch of a commemorative postage stamp and an international photography competition. (more…)
